No sounds or icons!

So i turned on gmod and i tried to build something but gmod didn't want to show me the spawn icons. So i couldn't spawn anything because i didn't know which button to click to spawn what i want. there is no sound either. when i shoot i dont hear anything. My computer isn't muted and i turned the volume setting to the max. I decided to uninstall and then install gmod again but it still didn't work. there is still no icons or sound. how can i fix this and what could it be
